About this Session
The theme of this session is "Shipping Research". Shipping has evolved from its original relationships with ships and seaborne trade to transporting cargoes between two geographical points. Shipping is a global industry and is closely related with international trade. Shipping management involves a network consisting of ship owners, terminal operators, carriers, and traders. Research in shipping aims to address both the theoretical and practical issues associated with managing shipping activities in today’s dynamic and complex business world. The Shipping Research Centre (SRC) aims to address research in shipping, both the theoretical and practical issues associated with managing shipping activities in today’s dynamic and complex business world.

About this Session
Enhancement of container security for inland terminals and hinterland transport is assuming greater significance in the context of fast changing global political and business environment. Several stakeholders in the container transport chain which include transport operators, shippers, forwarders, maritime carriers, custom authorities and government agencies, have a far reaching and deep interest in this issue. At times their interests come into sharp conflict which demands immediate resolution in order to prevent them from snowballing into stalling if not completely seizing the global; supply chains. Adoptions of new technologies such as smart box initiatives and container non-intrusive inspection have not only serious cost implications but also demand appropriate policy development and implementation. As such this special session is dedicated to the study of enhancement of container security in context of hinterland transport. The objective of the session is to encourage study of this critical subject by focusing on the myriad aspects of this research topic.

About this Session
In this session, some contemporary topics in logistics research are presented, including flexible capacity strategy, inventory management with cross-docking, green retailing, vehicle emission and a case study in supply chain service. Flexible production capacity and inventory are two key weapons to cope with the demand uncertainty in the market. Green retailing and vehicle emission are about environmental protection in retailing and transportation, respectively. The case study on supply chain service emphasizes operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

A Note on the Civil Liability Regime of Maritime Piracy-Caused Oil Pollution (M22) |
About this Session
Maritime Security has been a topic of persistent concern with businesses and governments for the past ten years. While these security concerns were related to terrorism in the few years after 9/11 terrorist attacks on United States, piracy is currently seen as the primary threat to shipping. Papers scheduled for presentation in this special session cover the entire gamut of maritime security. Prof. Sam Bateman addresses the issues related to ship vulnerability, port state inspections and flag state responsibilities. Paper M05 examine the security requirements mandated upon ships and ports by various security regimes, their implementation and effectiveness. Paper M22 addresses the risk of civil liabilities that arise from piracy triggered oil pollution.
